Regina City Council must strongly oppose the privatization SaskTel, according to Ward 3 Council candidate Andrew Stevens.
With the privatization of SaskTel Regina risks losing hundreds of well-paying head office jobs, in addition to a number of service, customer support, and affiliate dealer positions.
Customers across the province, particularly those in rural and Northern communities, could see their telecommunication bills to go up. We should also consider that SaskTel’s customer service reputation exceeds that of its private competitors across the country. It is also widely recognized as one of the most progressive and family-friendly employers in Canada.
The province’s decision to cut the film tax subsidy cost the City hundreds of jobs and devastated an industry that was not subject to boom and bust cycle of commodity prices. We can’t let the government make another mistake.
"Some will argue this is strictly a provincial issue” said Stevens. "But the Premier is never shy about speaking out on federal policies he believes might affect Saskatchewan. Municipal politicians have an equal responsibility to protect their communities. That’s why we need to keep SaskTel public."
